Travel Sickness
What it is
Travel sickness occurs when your brain receives conflicting messages
from your eyes and ears about the degree of movement experienced.
This usually happens when travelling in a closed space (eg car, plane,
below deck) when you tend to focus on nearby objects. Your eyes then
tell the brain you are stationary, while your balance organs say you
are not. Motion sickness is made worse by fear, anxiety, exhaust fumes,
a stuffy atmosphere, a-full stomach and the sight or smell of food.
One in three people are highly susceptible to travel sickness, one in three only suffer during fairly rough conditions while the remainder only react in prolonged, violently rough situations. Mild symptoms include uneasiness, headache, dizziness and drowsiness. More severe symptoms include excessive sweating and salivation, vertigo, an irresistible desire to stop moving, nausea and profuse vomiting.
Self help measures:
- Sit or stand near a source of fresh air when travelling
- Sit between the wheels in a coach, or over the wings in an aeroplane
- Eat little and often while travelling and avoid drinking alcohol
- Focus on a distant point such as the horizon
- Avoid reading a book or looking at a map in the car
- Take regular breaks to stretch your legs, if possible.
Applying magnetic patches
Apply a magnetic patch over the acupuncture point on each wrist. You
can also apply a patch just under the rib cage in the midline at the
front.
